A Visual Word and Character Count Tool for Writers, Marketers, & Designers
A Visual Word Count Tool That Changed How I Write + Design
Some of my most useful creations start as experiments. This one began with a question I have been asked countless times in marketing and communication work: How much is 150 words, really?
To answer it, I built a visual reference for both word counts and character counts, with the option to see them in adjustable column widths.
I filled the text with botanical and Latin names, whimsical enough to keep it neutral yet distinct enough to make each sample visually interesting. The point is not what the text says, but how it looks in different lengths and layouts.
As a communication specialist, I work across formats daily:
Before building the interactive Word Visualizer tool, I refined my original word length graphic into this cleaner “Rendition” for easier side-by-side comparison. It still left me wanting adjustable columns and the ability to switch between word and character counts, which led to the tool below.
Short social media captions
Blog post intros
Academic paragraphs
Digital ad copy
Email campaigns
Each has its own cadence. I can write 500+ words without hesitation, but 75 can feel fleeting and 150 strangely long. Now, I can see what those lengths look like before I even start writing, and even switch to a character count when precision is important.
The adjustable column feature is where the tool surprised me most. By sliding the width or dragging the column edge, I can instantly preview how the same content reads in a narrow email layout or a full-width blog post. It is like fitting text as a tailor fits fabric, measuring, trimming, and expanding with intention.
What began as a personal quick-reference is now part of my everyday workflow.
It is fast, intuitive, and proves that not every productivity tool needs to be complex to be effective. Sometimes, clarity and a touch of playfulness are enough to make the work feel effortless.
Try the Word Visualizer for yourself + see how your writing takes shape
Whether you are crafting social captions, refining ad copy, or designing for print and digital layouts
This simple Word Visualizer was born out of my own need to see how different word counts actually look on the page. It’s now one of my favorite quick-reference tools for writing, formatting, and content design.
